This summer I was lucky to take part in the Sail in Amsterdam. My work is related to Port of Amsterdam and shipping that’s why it was a “must see” on my list.
What is the Sail?
The Sail is a great opportunity to see all the Tall Ships and the maritime heritage. The Amsterdam foundation is promoting the city and Port of Amsterdam, the North Sea Canal Area and the municipalities within the SAIL Area.
You need to be lucky because the Sail in Amsterdam takes place only every five years in August.
Since its first edition in 1975, SAIL Amsterdam has grown to become the largest public event in the Netherlands and the largest free nautical event in the world. Every five years, in excess of 600 ships navigate along the North Sea Canal before mooring in and around the port in Amsterdam. The city of Amsterdam and the municipalities surrounding the North Sea Canal form the spectacular backdrop of SAIL, presenting a grand celebration of unity.
Spending whole day on a boat was an unique experience. My package was including aperitif, lunch and dinner on the boat what made it unique. Definitely want to do it again 🙂 You can also watch all the ships from the land. To give you an idea about the event please take a look on my pictures.
