As you probably know by now we really don’t like to spend weekends at home. Small research in Internet and we decided to go to Han-sur-Lesse in the Belgium Ardennes to do mountain biking. Unfortunately in the rental office the bikes were in bad condition so our plan has to be amended. As a “Plan B” we went for a visit in the domain of the Caves of Han- what at the end was a very good idea.
Beautiful nature in the Wildlife Park
The Wildlife Park is the only one in Belgium that has the European “Big Five”: the wolf, the bear, the lynx, the European bison and the wolverine. You can visit this park on foot or by Safari train ( we walked 8-9 km on foot what is the best in my opinion). The park has 250 hectares where the animals can live in their natural environment. This Wildlife Park is the only one in Belgium that has the European “Big Five”: the wolf, the bear, the lynx, the European bison and the wolverine.
The Wildlife Park count mainly different kind of animals species that live or used to live in this region. These animals roam semi-free in speciose area. Amongst these species that have disappeared or have been hunted to extinction in it, some like the tarpan and the aurochs have been recreated. Other endangered species are the subject of great attention and reconstruction schemes. Below you can see a list of major animals that you will meet during your visit in this Domain.
The brown bear
The raccoon dog
The red deer
The wild boar
The caves of Han
Second part of the trip was visiting the biggest caves in Belgium and one of the biggest attraction of the country. The caves are the result of the underground erosion of a limestone hill by the river Lesse. For most of its length, it is a meandering river. We visited in the past other caves but those are very spectacular. You will spend about one hour in the underground corridors and enjoy light spectacle as well.
If you decide to combine two attractions (The caves plus the Wildlife park) you will pay 29 EUR per adult instead of 19 EUR for a single activity.
